X Marks the Spot

Spotted outside of Brattle Square. Is that a bear-eared hat?
Quite fond of the X’s stitched on to her collared shirt.

Le Grunge

Posted by Emily on Friday, April 5th, 2013
For some odd reason, I don’t often post grunge outfits on this site. I suppose it’s a matter of individual preference, but somehow I felt that this particular lady, walking around one evening in Harvard Square, pulled off the style in such a compelling way. Soft fur material thrown against radioactive neons? Awesome. Would never have thought of such a unique combo myself.
This outfit speaks “thrift-store brilliance” if you ask me.

The Egg Hunt

Posted by Emily on Sunday, March 31st, 2013
Happy Easter everyone. For my Easter festivities, I went on an egg hunt with some of my friends. Pictured here is David, appropriately attired in the brightest orange hunting coat I’ve ever seen. And clear glasses frames that I want.
And holding an egg for you.

Jordan, Take 2

Posted by Emily on Thursday, March 28th, 2013
You might remember having seen Jordan on the blog once before. I saw him again the other day, dressed just as snazzily as ever. Geometric print sweater and detailed trench.
Great layering.

Tall Tails

Posted by Emily on Monday, March 18th, 2013
Perhaps even more rare of a sight than pink dyed hair is a huge white fur tail dangling off of someone’s black leather backpack.

I met this lovely lady while I was shopping around at Oona’s Vintage (my favorite store in the Square). She works in merchandising at Urban Outfitters.

Seriously, could you be any cooler?

I asked her about her rings, and she said that they were all given to her by the different women that she’s known throughout her life.

…Also, is that a molar tattooed onto her left ring finger? Because that’s kind of awesome.

Urban Turban

Posted by Emily on Saturday, March 16th, 2013
Also in New York: my friend Angela in a cocoon coat and chunky sweater dress.

I’ve rarely seen purple work well in an outfit, now that I think of it; it’s a hard color to match, but Angela definitely pulls it off.

I loved her knit turban, apparently a trending item in 2013.

Circle Cat-Eye Shades

Posted by Emily on Monday, March 11th, 2013
I was in New York this past weekend, wandering around and about Soho (ended up going to Uniqlo, of course, the mecca of wardrobe staples) when I caught sight of this fabulous lady in round cat-eye sunglasses. I love her choice of neutral tones, and the eccentric pairing of two hair bandanas.
Her drapey unbuttoned silhouette was so relaxed. Perfect for a carefree Saturday.

And before you go: check out this awesome new feature on us written by Her Campus.

Anna

Posted by Emily on Monday, February 11th, 2013
Hope you all survived Nemo alright and are perhaps even playing in some of the snow left behind in its wake.

Some outfits, like this one worn by Mather House Super Senior & Applied Mathematics concentrator Anna Roth, look fantastic in snow. The black coat is so startling against fields of white.

And don’t the cuffs and fur trim look so snow flurry-appropriate?

“As for my style influences, it would be unfair of me to say anyone but my mother, from whom I stole this outfit wholesale.

She used to design very dramatic and modern clothes and have them custom made. There are these striking photos of her walking around Belgrade and Moscow in the 70s and 80s in the clothes she designed. As you can imagine, she looks sensational.”

“I find the styles of the late twenties to be particularly elegant, although it does not really inform how I dress. I am more interested in how women dress for work from any era between the late thirties and early nineties. Work wear does seems to have peaked in excitement somewhere in the seventies.”
And you might be surprised to find someone so stylish admit: “I very rarely shop. I don’t enjoy it.”

Depth Perception

Posted by Emily on Sunday, February 3rd, 2013
I promise the handbag was not simply a cartoon I superimposed onto this picture.

New Yorker Sueann, who was in Boston for the weekend, was toting around this high contrast, fruit-colored purse that surely would make anyone look twice. Though a fully functional bag, it seemed, from afar, like a two-dimensional flat image from a comic book. You can get one here.

Phew. I thought I was living in a cartoon reality for a second there.

And of course, a 70’s-does-Gatsy themed shirt.

Also––notice that crosstie. That piece of black cloth underneath her collar. I thought they’ve been largely phased out. But it looks like Sueann’s bringing them back (going to buy myself a pair on Etsy right NOW).

Very stylish. It’s no wonder that she’s been featured once before on the fashion pages of the Wall Street Journal.
